Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc.

  Zone 6

ZONE 6 is located in Central Ontario and includes the Master Gardener groups: Lake Simcoe South, Mississauga, Oakville and Etobicoke.

Lake Simcoe
South Master Gardeners

Lake Simcoe South Master Gardeners (LSSMG) was formed in 1988 when  Audrey Whitcombe, a member of a local horticultural society, organized a group of volunteers and became the first coordinator. Our service area includes York Region, from Steeles Avenue north to Lake Simcoe , and west to Highway 27.

In 1990 LSSMG began taping shows for a local television station until the network was sold in 1996. At that time we moved on to other volunteer venues including the Sutton, Markham and Schomberg fairs, the CNE and weekly farmer’s markets in Newmarket and Markham. Our speaker series has provided presentations at local libraries and municipalities, and our members regularly contribute articles to newspapers and magazines in York Region.

Two LSSMG members were successful in obtaining a grant from the Fiskar’s Orange Thumb project. Tools and materials were purchased to assist a raised-bed community garden for nearby residents to grow vegetables and flowers. Since 2008 we have maintained an email hotline for gardening advice at lssmastergardeners@gmail.com. .Our webpage has details about our special events including an annual plant sale, upcoming presentations, and our garden tour at: LSSMG website. A brochure with membership information can also be downloaded from our site.

We meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month in Newmarket .

Etobicoke Master Gardeners

Our group was formed in January 2005 and is meant to cover the west side of Toronto and take in those people who want to study for the MG designation .

We meet at Royal York Road United Church on Royal York Road and Glenroy.  Our meetings are held during the winter months on the fourth Thursday evening.

Diane Pettet is the coordinator and she can be reached at 416 233 9292 or diane.pettet@sympatico.ca.

We have sixteen active people – eleven master gardeners and five in the process of studying to take their Interim Exam. We would welcome enquiries from anyone wishing to learn more about joining our group.

Oakville Master Gardeners

We started our group in November 2004.  Initially we met in a United Church in the northern end of 0akville where we had to set up for ourselves which was inconvenient but the price was right.  We also had to bring  along our own screen for any speakers we had.  We are now meeting in the Central Library in downtown 0akville which is wonderful.  We have a large room with all the amenities and because we are a non profit group the fee is reasonable.

We started our group with seven MG's and the rest were trainees, unfortunately due to various reasons: moving away, babies etc we have lost quite a few people and have only gained two.
We have held a plant sale in the fall of last year and supplied Terra Nurseries with Master Gardeners for the month of May in the past. We were fortunate enough to get Martin Gallaway to speak to us also last year and we also  charged the public a nominal fee.

Last year we gave advice for  the renovations to the gardens at the Ian Anderson House, a Cancer Hospice. We are trying to partner with the Town of Oakville for the greening of the town. We are still a very small group so find it difficult to fill any commitments we would like to make.

Mississauga Master Gardeners

Mississauga Master Gardeners is a small group of 19 members. We are fortunate in having many opportunities available to serve the public from our booths in Toronto, Etobicoke and Mississauga. Canada Blooms, Successful Gardening, CNE and Fall Home Show are four major events that we not only attend but solicit assistance from other groups.  We begin in January with regular Sunday afternoon advice sessions at the Centennial Conservatory in Etobicoke.  Other opportunities such as Seedy Saturday at the Unitarian Church in Mississauga and the Communities in Bloom judging event inevitably require our attention.

The advantage of being a small group allows us to have meetings in members gardens.  We are also able to focus our monthly speaker on the needs of the group.  Our experienced members have invaluable personal  connections and resources such as slides and videos that are very helpful to our MGITs.

Our close association with the Mississauga Garden Council and Riverwood offers tremendous potential for volunteering in an established garden and teaching program. One of our members has a regular "Ask a Master Gardener" column in the Mississauga Garden Council's newsletter.
